Having a Baby, Choosing a Name

Published by admin under choosing a baby name

When choosing a name for your child, there are many traditions you can follow, or even start your own. For our family, and many others, it has been to take one of the names of the parents, whichever is applicable. We did indeed do that for our first child, but are deciding not to for our second.

So when you decide not to follow a tradition how do you begin to choose a name that “fits” and unborn child. Well hopefully our site can help put some meaning behind certain names, but it is hard to follow that regime also. So the best way is to let it come to you.

We don’t mean to mediate for 9-10 months waiting to hear the wind blow the chosen name, but rather start early and just practice. Practice the inevitable first name, middle name attention getter when your child is doing something he/she shouldn’t be. Does “Robert Anthony” sound right? How about “Elizabeth Samatha, don’t do that”? It sounds silly, but you will be surprised how that ring can help you settle on a name.

Also think about the future. Many times names, in our opinion, sound great as childrens’ names but maybe not as an adult. More formal names will lose the fight to nicknames as time goes on and it might not have that same ring you intended over time. This will only lead to that conversation once the teenage years arrive as you argue what to call him/her in front of their peers.

In short, give it some thought. Don’t start thinking about it on the way to the hospital for delivery. When it is time to talk to your child while in the womb, it would be a good idea to have some initial names chosen by then. You might even find you will get a reaction to certain names as they swim and kick inside your belly!

Have fun and please keep in mind, you are giving them something they have to live with, not you ;)
